‪Bird watching / wild life‬
משפחה • דצמ׳ 2019
‪If you have to choose between wild life vs zipline/thermal/waterfall, you would enjoy cerro Gaital a lot more for being quietly amazed by tropical forest wildlife.

However, if you expect thermal or zipline, please go elsewhere. Sometimes it’s worth doing a bit of a research to avoid going to a wrong destination and complain afterwards, to be fair.

Minutes after we got off our van, we saw a huge hummingbird right away! Not to mention many more other rare birds. It’s definitely worth to hire a local wildlife guide who knows all the details. Ours is super professional. He has all the singing of the various birds on his phone and he also carries a portable amplifier of these recorded singing to attract the rare birds for our easy sighting. He does it in a way that is not annoying to the nature and not other travellers (who are actually curious to see what birds would come!)

We were also lucky to spot two sloths separately and one was even slowing moving!
We also saw the biggest life blue butterfly we ever saw in the wild, and many more interesting plants.

The climb uphill was not difficult but was a bit slippery coming downhill so a pair of hiking shoes or even sticks are advisable. I didn’t bring sticks but had a pair of gloves so it helped a bit. (Sunblock/mosquito repellent/ rain coat just in case) Don’t forget your binoculars of course!

But it is so worth to see both oceans once you are at the top and overlook the living village in the crater. Enjoy a good hike!

‪Great hike‬
חברים • פבר׳ 2019
‪A good hike for anyone used to hiking. On a clear day from the wood platform at the top, you can see both oceans and the Canal. Alas, it was cloudy the day we hiked so could see that far but it still was a good view. February was a little early for the orchids along the path to be blooming but a few were open and they were pretty. Take the loop path to the left, it’s a little easier to go up.

‪Great view and good wildlife spotting‬

‪It's a little bit of a drive out of ElValle, but well worth it. A new entrance building appears to be about to open.
We climbed up following the trail which was easy to follow seeing butterflies, birds and a sloth. View from the top was excellent on this clear day, although the viewing 'platform' has seen better days. Came down around the rest of the loop.
We tried going a little past the platform but need to come back dressed better.
Easy to find, easy park and then a good walk up and down. Not sure what it would be like in the rain or cloud.‬

‪Rewarding birding hiking ‬
חברים • יוני 2017
‪Our guides, Danilo and Eleazar, from the nearby Canopy Lodge parked our small bus and led us up a steep and rocky trail looking for hard to find birds of the upper elevations of this part of the Panamanian rainforest. We were amply rewarded with sightings of many gorgeous avian beauties like the Green Hermit, a nearly 6 inch hummingbird. ‬

‪SUPERB VIEW THROUGH MOUNTAINS‬

‪This hike can be dangerous because you are walking tru tree vines around Gaital mountains. The view is amazing, make sure you have good hiking shoes and a machete in case of something blocking your way.‬

‪Beautiful hike‬

‪The hike takes about two hours to do. The trail loops and is well marked. You can see the valley from the top if it's not too cloudy.‬

‪After reading the review by Scott C of New York, we entered the park from the Los Mandarinos hotel as he - came from Los Mandarinos, turned left, saw the sign, then walked up the hill until we saw the yellow shack.

From there, we saw two paths, and weren't sure which to take. Unlike Scott C we took the right path instead. We hiked up steep hill for a while, then the trail became muddy and slippery under the heavily over grown vegetation. The trail was marked very sparsely with old plastic shopping bag pieces tied to tree trunks. Thanks to whomever done that. They were like lifelines. When we tried to turn back we were already too far up. We were completely secluded (never saw another soul) and scared. No cell signal, no guides, no maps. One wrong step to either side of the knife like cliff we could be in a ditch or worse. If we did, helicopter could not locate us under the heavy vegetation. With no other choice we continued the hike and finally reached the top. What a view! What a relief!!

Then there was a well marked trail, still stiff, but equipped with ropes on the other side of the mountain from where we came from. That trail took us down to a spot where we were on the previous day. We had done the well marked "Serro Gaital National Park" hike the day before and thought this hike would be similar. Walked through the village down, then took a bus back to town and to hotel.

Had done a wonderful hike and learned a lesson.
Don't go hiking unprepared with wrong assumption.‬

‪Slippery when wet‬
לבד • נוב׳ 2016
‪This is a nature hike. Our guide "Joe" booked through Nexus was marvellous. Very knowledgeable, a snake specialist, and patient. At first, I couldn't understand the slow pace but soon got it it. This man is attuned to nature, he sees things because he knows how to look. He hears things, and then knows to look. The walk, though not long is steep and slippery. The view from the top - Caribbean on one side and Pacific on the other is spectacular. We wanted Sloths and he found them. A very poisonous Eyelash Viper was mentioned but assured a spotting was unlikely - Joe excitedly spotted one just off the trail (1 Metre!) A great day's outing with a typical Panamanian lunch stop thrown in.‬

‪Of course the nature is spectacular, we saw several beautiful birds and a sloth. But as with most touristy things in Panama, very little effort to make a place easily accessible or maintain a site is the case here. We found the entrance after asking several people along the way. The entrance fee is cheap...$2 for residents $5 for tourists. BUT finding our way to the top of the trail was pure chance as all the signs are washed out, there are no directions posted. The rest points are delapitated benches and when u get to the summit there is not only a precarious look out tower but totally dangerous, ready to fall over. If you take the other path going down, be warned that it is not for the too young or old or anyone not in good physical shape. It consists of stairs made out of stone that are slippery and a very precarious (there is that word again) railing.‬
