OK, it's not the Acropolis Museum, but this is an excellent exemplar of its type: a tidy, compact, well-lit little local museum with a fine collection of attractive and clearly labeled artifacts. The introductory video was concise, entertaining and informative. We saw evidence that there was (is?) an audio guide, but we were not offered one. However, between Google Translate and items labeled in English, we did fine. As an added bonus, we were the only people there the entire time. Tip: make sure to visit this museum before going to its partner antiquarium up the hill; your ticket here will get you into both.

Interesting. Some find this extrelemy boring but there has been a big city 2500 years ago. Within walking distance BUT an adventure. Next to a nice pizzeria too.

If you are close to Palermo and you want an idea of the development of a landscape, YOU HAVE TO GO TO HIMERA. I had only the pleasure to be in the antiquarium on the hill, because the archaeological site was getting hit by a fire. The antiquarium is well preserved, have all services and is good explained.
I hope he can improve some explaining video or multimedial services.
I advice to continue for the archaeological site of the Tempio della Vittoria and his new special Museo Pirro Marconi.

Excellent exhibition with pictures that really lightens the cutiosity about archeology. The kids loved the sceletons.
We were let in for free even if we came on a Monday and it was closed, What a good service!

We found this site extremely difficult to find even though we later realised we had travelled past it several times on the SS113. The sign to the actual ruins is quite small and not like the expected white on brown signs seen elsewhere for attractions. The ruins themselves are disappointing as they are overgrown with weeds and you can't really get to them. As my partner is blind, I usually pace such places out with her so that she gets an idea of the size of temples etc but this was not possible. Other than a few display boards given details of the ancient site there isn't a lot more to see than can be seen from the road. We got the impression from a staff member on the site that you had to get a ticket from the museum to see the ruins but this proved not to be so - the ticket is just for the museum.
The museum, which is up a hill above the site, is quite interesting. I would suggest driving here rather than walking although it would be possible to walk - go down the road with the car park on the left and ruins on the right and take the next turning left and follow the road up to the museum. There is a charge of €2 to go into the museum. We were given a large binder containing an English translation of the large boards of text in the Museum. The English used was tortuous to say the least and in some place, nearly incomprehensible. As there was so much text (almost the size of a small novel!) I ended up just scan reading it and sharing the odd tidbit of information (and occasional funny translations!) with my partner. There are some impressive exhibits in the museum such as the artwork from the temple, the mosaic floor, the lion's head, and the massive amphora. Also the skeletons that seemed to positioned in blocks of sand were interesting.
I have suggested a visit time of 1-2hrs just for the sheer amount of reading that you could end up doing.

can't believe we had this place all to ourselves, the museo was only 2 euros and full of exhibits. Not difficult to find and not far from Cefalu.

The displays are very well done and many pieces are quite unique and some even quite funny. The museum would deserve to be better known. The explanations are only in Italian which can be a disadavantge.
