We travelled as a family to El Rocio with the view of exploring the Donana national park and in the hope of spotting the Iberian Lynx.
Jose was honest from the initial contact emails re what to expect to see in the national park during this season.
He collected us from our bed and breakfast before sunrise. It's a beautiful time of the day and we got some lovely photos.
Jose made many efforts throughout the trip to look for the lynx and is an amazing spotter as well as has an eye for good photo opportunities. He was informative about the local species and was great at age appropriate information for my son.
He is also very responsible and makes great efforts to pick up rubbish that have been thoughtlessly thrown that may affect the wildlife.
Although we did not see the lynx, we saw an imperial eagle which is also very special amongst a variety of other bird species.
If you're looking for a responsible jeep tour operator, I would highly recommend Jose!

We booked with Jose in May 2023. He picked us up at 7am from our apartment and we had a very enjoyable day using his 4x4 in the Donana National Park. He is very friendly and good company. His knowledge of the area, ecology and wildlife is excellent. He knows where to go to see whatever you are interested in. Whether that is birds, animals or flora. There has not been enough rain for a few years now but he went out of his way to explore extra areas for raptors to make up for some of marshes that had dried up. An expert in spotting and hearing the local birds which helped us get a couple of lifers and will impress any life-long birder. I can recommend Jose and Discovering Donana to anyone who wants to visit the area.

We (4) booked a 5 hours trip with José in mid June 2023. Although we saw only a few animals these 5 hours were a wonderful experience. José is the best guide you can get in the Doñana. So, next time….we call José again (only hope to see more animals).

Really glad we did this. Picked up by Jose from our hotel at 7am and although we were out for a full five hours we couldn’t believe how the time just rolled by. We were lucky to see a Lynx but there is so much else to see if you just relax and enjoy the bird life in particular. Jose is very knowledgeable about all aspects of the wildlife - birds, fauna and flora and his command of their English names was very impressive. He is also expert with the spotting scope so you could get to see the birds in beautiful detail.

We had a truly lovely time with José in the park. His knowledge of what happens there is phenomenal, which makes it all the more interesting. It seemed that he could see and hear things that us lesser mortals would have easily missed. Go and see Doñana before it dries up completely, or before someone builds a road across it, and, if you do go, I recommend Discovering Doñana happily.

My sister and I were not impressed by this tour. We did get a few lifers but the guides enthusiasm was underwhelming. Quite a bit of time was spent looking for Iberian mammals instead of birds. There was little effort to get birds into the scope.

We're sorry you did not get what you expected. I have to say that our shared tours are not specially design for birdwatching but to attend everyone's needs. You would have had much more time spent on birds by choosing one of our private tours. Next time, hopefully. Thanks for your opinion anyway

This was the first private birding tour we’ve ever done. It was wonderful!! We explored several different habitats by vehicle and on foot. Our guide Jose was very knowledgeable and patient with what were probably lots of silly questions. We’d definitely highly recommend this experience and would do it again.

We booked Discovering Donana for bird watching in Dec. 2022. We are happy the tour is comprehensive and detailed. The vehicle is great, and Jose is very knowledgeable about all birds in this area. Although there were not much rain over the past years thus the wetland is not very wet and bird numbers and species not as good as we would expect, bird watching experience in Donana is a great experience. Also, although we were not lucky enough to spot lynx, if there is a chance in the future to come back, we will still book Discovering Donana for our tour to look for lynx.

We had a great experience with Jose during our trip to Andalucia. Jose is a wealth of knowledge in all related to nature, wildlife, preservation, passionate about environmental issues and keeping the planet safe. He is a pleasant person to talk with. His knowledge about Donana National Park is unique, combining also history and archeology. He made efforts to show us as many animals and flora he could find during the dry season, and motivated us to explore it to the best. He also assisted us in finding additional nature attractions to watch in the area, and even his recommendation for lunch was a good one. We will certainly recommend any of our friends visiting the area to consider this experience in their traveling plans.

We had a really enjoyable time with Jose in his 4x4 he was terrific, extremely knowledgeable and very anxious for us to see as much as possible. Before we booked Jose had told us mid September would be the end of the dry season and the wildlife would not not as abundant as at other times but never the less we had a great experience, highlights being the herds of rutting Red Deer, Marsh Harrier, Little Owl, Spoonbills, Wryneck and many migrating warblers. Jose went out of his way to find Storks a particular favourite of my wife and at the same time we caught a glimpse of a Black Stork. As a result he willingly gave us much more of his time than the half day we had booked.

My husband and I would like to visit the Doñana National Park (myself especially for birding) at the end of December 2019. Could you please let me know which tour did you book?
I've read the reviews and this tour "Discovering Donana" seems to be very good, and I would like to book something where people have been pleased with what they've seen, in terms of birds and nature, and especially in winter time.

Voy a estar 3 días en Mazagón este mes y me gustaría conocer el parque de Doñana. No conozco nada. Puedo acercarme en coche a donde me digáis.

Hola, yo te recomiendo visitar los centros de visitantes de La Rocina, el Acebron y el del Acebuche por donde hay senderos, y contratar una visita de 4 horas que sale desde El Rocío por el norte del parque, nosotros (una familia de 2 adultos y 2 niñas) lo hicimos solos con Discovering Doñana y quedamos encantados, es un poco más caro que la visita en grupo pero se adecua a tus necesidades. Si vas sólo te sale mejor en un grupo.

Hi!
1) Is Discovering Donana operating tours of the national park these days? Or, is August such a dry month that they are all on vacation? I have sent them two e-mails in three days through their 'Contact Us' page and not received an answer! They give no e-mail address, so it has not been possible to contact them independently.
2) Is August a hopeless month to visit Donana? We are thinking of going there around the 20th or so of this month!

Thanks for your help Paul. I am touring Peru until the 21st and trying to organise things from here. Summer is not the best time to visit Doñana since the marshes are dry and temperatures high but if you are planning to stay in the area anyway it would be good to take a half day tour starting early, before sunset, in order to increase chances to spot our mammals.
