‪Sadly still closed. The staff were most apologetic and gave me information on other sites instead. However, the adjacent station is still worth visiting, if you're interested in railway history. The train runs twice a day at 6am and 4pm to Arica. Definitely worth watching it trundle South along the street.‬

‪Tacna is a pretty ghastly town -- crowded, decrepit and with no architectural merit. But the railway museum was a delightful find. They clearly don't have many visitors (they had to unlock the gate to let me in) and the curator was eager to show me round. They clearly don't have much money to spend on restoration, so the engines are much as they were when they were abandoned in the goods yard that now forms the museum. The three superb steam engines would have been lovingly polished in Europe or the US. Here the dust adds to the atmosphere. A surprise is that the workshop -- with all the equipment to make and repair engines -- is still there and could potentially be made to work, especially as the moulds for parts are also preserved. A steam enthusiast from the UK would be in heaven!‬

‪Nice collection of trains and cars converted to run on tracks, but it also includes a very big collection of metal working machines/tools including hundreds of wooden models of parts that were used in forming the voids in sand mold for pouring metal parts. Definitely little dusty but well preserved. Well worth a visit for any train buff, or engineer! As a bonus... the first room has an (older) collection of stamps featuring trains on them, and contemporary newspapers with headlines about the railroad. We paid 5 soles/person to visit (February 2015).‬

‪An excellent collection of railway spares, tools and equipment for carrying out repairs. Perhaps a little dusty but well preserved. Also some old cars converted to run on the tracks. Well worth a visit for any train buff.‬

‪Located in the former railway station, this place has a soul of its own. One can revisit the very active past of railways in the region through maps, pictures, items and a whole raft of engines and carriages in various states of repair or disrepair. A superb visit.‬
