I can’t write enough good things about this truly magical place. From the location, which is as close to nature as you can possibly get, to Dammann and Hettie the extraordinary hosts who do absolutely everything within their power to ensure that your every need and want is catered for. They and their family are honestly some of the kindest and most genuine people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. We were here for 3 nights but could have easily stayed for double that time. We were very sad to leave and have come away with very special memories that will last a lifetime. We so much hope that we find ourselves in this incredible part of the world again.
Authentisches, heutiges Dorfleben, kein Museum. Wir wollen unbedingt wiederkommen. Als Gast kommen, als Freund verabschiedet werden.
When we saw the accommodation, we couldn't stop smiling; it was everything we'd been looking for. Beautiful design, with bathroom open to the elements and the sounds of hippos grunting and monkeys rustling through the trees. We'd arrived on public transport and Willemien was absolutely fabulous in helping us access a local shop and organising local activities. Indeed her hospitality and Askiesbos itself, will remain as one of my outstanding memories of a fabulous trip to Botswana. Many thanks. Rachel
The place is incredible with an amazing view to the Okavango delta. Hettie and Damman and their family fill the place with joy although you also have intimate spaces to feel one with the nature. The tents and the open bathrooms are very well designed. You can experience a bath with crocodiles at your side and at night the hippos sometimes came to visit the area. Hettie is an extraordinary cook, the food as always different and very well balanced in flavours. They also provide visits around, like a boat trip in the Okavango, a local village walk, etc. A place to visit again for sure!
My first impression of Askiesbos was not very encouraging. At the end of a dusty track the taxi from Shakawe came to a halt in front of a high metal gate chained and padlocked shut. Admittedly I had arrived early and unannounced but this did not look at all like a place where I would want to spend the 4 nights I had reserved. Well, how wrong that impression was. This is a lovely place. Not just in its location right on the edge of Okavango's waters, but the complete experience. I slept in a capacious tent with the private bathroom a few steps away, open to the skies. Sitting there in the black African night a few metres away from a hippo grumbling to itself in the reeds was an exciting experience. Staying here you soon begin to feel (and be treated) like a member of the family. Dammann and Hester are warm and generous hosts. Home cooked meals (using ingredients from the adjoining land) are delicious, often taken with the family. Excursions by boat into the delta, or by 4x4 to such places as the Tsodilo Hills (excellent) are available but not hard sold. Prices are very reasonable too. Askiesbos is an oasis, relax if you wish, be as active as you like. All in all, a highly recommended, and for me at least, unique experience.…
